oct_john_salty_2011The picture above is of my friend, John Jordan.  Pictured with John is his personal best 335 lb. yellowfin tuna, taken aboard Maximus Sportfishing, February of 2015.  It’s funny, about 5 years ago, I went on my very first tuna trip (right) with John and his buddy Jeff Squires (aka One Cool Tuna).  John and Jeff chartermastered that trip aboard the Eclipse.  Since then, I’ve come a long ways…my personal fishing game, my network withing the fishing community, writing for BD Outdoors…everything has stepped up a level.

When I saw John get that fish, it was all I needed to see to pull the trigger on going myself.  And who more appropriate to go with than John on his charter this year?

Getting There

IMG_1670It was a crazy week.  I left So Cal to go to Orlando for work on Sunday, February 21st.  I returned on Wednesday night, then turned right around and left for Puerto Vallarta Thursday morning.  I met John and most of our party at the Irvine Marriott, where we parked for our Southwest Airlines flight direct to PV.  Traffic was brutal getting there and I barely made it to the Marriott in time to go on the same shuttle as the rest of group.  Then my crimping tool got confiscated by TSA.  Once, I was finally on the plane and seated, I breathed a huge sigh of relief.  Whew!  Made it.  Two and half hours later, we landed in Puerto Vallarta.

Upon landing and making our way through baggage claim and customs, we met up with the rest of our group for the trip.  There were 10 of us:  John, myself, Darren, Vince, Shek, Alex, Cliff, Mikey, Bill, and Dan.

A thankfully short, unbelievably packed van ride later and we were dockside at the boat.

Welcome to our home for the next 3 days…
