You had to know we were in for trouble just looking at this sign

Juliana is getting over an ear infection, so ex-Mrs. Salty asked that she not go out on a boat this weekend.  OK fine.  So today, Salty tried to take the kids lake fishing.  The original plan was to meet up with my buddy Ben, aka @CatchAlert at Lake Skinner for some striper action.  Jake and I have been dying to hook into a striped bass, so we figured we’d give it a try.  “How did it go?” All I’ll say is that the original title of this post was going to be, “Top 10 Reasons Salty Hates Freshwater Fishing.”  Suffice to say the day didn’t go as planned.  Instead of making it to Lake Skinner, we ended up somewhere else.  And instead of striper or rainbows for dinner, let’s just say I was happy that I had some tasty red snapper waiting for me and the kids in the fridge.

At least new friend Sergio caught something

I was also happy to remember that I had a bag of Dan Hernandez’ Baja Fish Batter from my swag bag on the Indian trip last weekend.  I’d made it before as they carry it at Superior Supermarket, the Mexican supermarket I love to frequent.  However, I thought it was kind of heavy…too batter-y.  The secret though, as shared by Dan’s chartermaster, Larry Yoshida, is to use beer instead of water as the packaging says.

Secret ingredient: cerveza

Well, the secret ingredient proved to be the ticket.  Juju helped me make it and soon we were enjoying a nice meal.  All thoughts of the day of fishing that might have been faded away.  If you’re not a SoCal local, you can go to Dan’s online store to pick some up.  I highly recommend it.

Juju likes helping Salty in the kitchen

Hang on Juj! Wait for your brother
