If you ever fish the 3/4 day boats in San Diego, you may notice some of the older guys fishing a surface iron will “wire it.”  Capt. John Anjard (private boats, sport boats, commercial) has been a fishing mentor for me.  John is one of the guys I’ve noticed who wires a jig.  Wiring a jig is an absolute must if you want to throw a jig in the weeds (kelp) for yellows or calico bass, or if you’re paddy hopping offshore.  John feels like wiring a jig just makes it swim better though, so he always wires his surface iron.

John uses a knot called the Beecham Wire Twist.  In this video, he demonstrates how to do it.
