Hi everyone.  Been really busy for the last week and had other writing obligations.  Just wanted to give you a quick catch up on what we’ve beeIMG_0357n up to

Trip Report – Spitfire Twilight, Mon. July 8th

Summer bass fishing has been good.  Despite the additional 2 inches required now to take one (14″ vs. 12″), I’ve observed many boats getting limits from San Diego to Santa Monica Bay.  Even up in the Channel Islands where they don’t typically target bass, it’s been better than usual.  I decided to get in on the fun and get a fish in before my trip to Las Vegas for ICAST.  I met my buddy Chris and his friend Butch at the dock and we rode the Spitfire, out of Marina Del Rey for their twilight run.

Capt. John Corzell took us out for some standard leadhead and squid bass fishing.  We encountered a stiff current, which made for tough fishing.  A legal bass was hard to come by, but I managed two…1 calico and 1 sand.  The sand bass was maybe 2 lbs., but on this night was good enough to take jackpot.

ICAST – Las Vegas, July 9-12

Tuesday, July 9th was Juliana’s 7th birthday.  After a birthday dinner with the kids, I packed the car and headed to Vegas.  I was on assignment for Western Outdoor News, covering all the Best Of Show winners for the paper.  Look for that coverage in this week’s issue.  I found some other cool salty stuff though and I’ll try to put together a post of some of the more interesting things to look out for in the coming months at your local tackle shop.

San Diego Inshore – Sunday, July 14th

I got home from ICAST Friday afternoon and got to spend a night in my own bed (ahhhh!), but then turned around and drove down to SD Saturday afternoon.  I had my first offshore trip of the year on the Eclipse, leaving Sunday night.  I always like to go down a day early, get the fresh dope from John (he’s been 2nd ticket this year on the El Capitan out of Point Loma), and check my gear with him.  We did all the gear stuff Saturday night, so we had some time on Sunday day to do a little dock fishing.

We were looking for a reprise of the inshore extravaganza we had around this time last year, when we loaded up on halibut and corvina.  That outing we fished twilight, which is a much better way to go, but my boat was leaving at 9pm, so we hit it in the afternoon as the tide was coming back in.  Not as successful…3 small halibut, a bunch of spotties, and a dogfish shark which gave me a heck of  run on light tackle.  Spotted bay bass are a great fish.  They pack lots of fight for their size, so it was a fun outing nevertheless.

So that was last week.  I’ll put together a trip report from my offshore outing and try to get a product preview out from ICAST in the next few days.  Tight lines!
